Nerdy Movement isn’t “organizing 101.”
It is a comprehensive, six-week program for experienced organizers to learn evidence-based approaches for recruiting new members, increasing their commitment and capability to lead, and building strong member teams that learn and adapt to changing conditions.
Nerdy Movement goes beyond the interpersonal. It focuses on structural approaches and organizational practices that create the conditions necessary for quality motivation and improved performance and well-being of volunteers and members.

Practice makes perfect progress
Forget the lecture hall where you need to snack to stay awake. Nerdy Movement is thoughtfully designed to help you apply what you learn…as you learn it.
Here’s how it works:
The study
Each week, you’ll unlock one of the six modules that contains more than 30 individual written or video lessons, including optional and supplementary content if you want to go deeper into a specific area.
The small group
Based on your role and goals, you’ll be placed in a learning circle with two or three other people to discuss the content and practice what you are learning.
The implementation
Each week’s content is accompanied by quizzes, activities, examples, and templates to help you retain what you are learning and apply the lessons to your work right away.
The 1:1
In the early weeks, we’ll gather your goals. After your six-week cohort, you’ll have a 1:1 call between you + Randall or Sophia to support you in applying what you learned.
The practice
We gather weekly for a two-hour video call where, as a group, we’ll discuss and practice what you’re learning with both your small group and other organizers.
The community
Ongoing access to a private Slack workspace gives you space to ask questions of and share experiences with a global cross-movement community of people like you.

"I'm building a trans liberation movement narrative infrastructure in the South and Midwest for Transgender Law Center. It's a daunting task given the political environment and I joined Nerdy Movement Study Group looking for some grounding on how to lead high functioning teams in the midst of overlapping cycles of crises. I didn't realize what I was actually looking for was a way to motivate myself and others to believe we have all the tools we need to win when we work together.
The class was a welcome break from my day-to-day barrage of Zoom meetings and drafting strategy documents. Reading case studies from the field - both the progressive movement and the opposition - and every week getting a new tool to try out was a gift! No matter what I was doing in my work, I found something that inspired an A-Ha! moment or gave me a tool to turn my anger or despair into action. Who are we, exactly? Your fellow nerds, of course.
Hi, I’m Randall Smith:
I’m a director at PowerLabs, where I help organizations design and run high-participation, people-powered campaigns.
I got my start as an activist when I joined a walkout to protest the first Gulf War in middle school. Later, I interned with a youth organization doing the spade work that contributed to a high profile and inspiring fight, and my future in organizing was sealed.
Since then, I’ve helped dozens of organizations apply insights from the science of motivation to their work, and they have used those insights to:
Introduce and popularize the Green New Deal and pass historic climate legislation,
Win state-level legislation and ballot measure campaigns,
Grow from 50 volunteers to 150 chapters in 18 months,
Create dozens or hundreds teams building the organization in their community.
The short list of organizations I’ve worked with includes Courage California, Forward Together, Free Press, IfNotNow, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, Movimiento Cosecha, Missouri Organizing and Voter Engagement Collaborative, Showing Up for Racial Justice, Sunrise Movement, and United for Respect.
But my favorite thing is to introduce new organizations to this work through Nerdy Movement, where organizers show up in community to reimagine how they partner with their members to thrive as they pursue a collective purpose.
When I’m not working, you’ll find me skateboarding, biking, or walking in the woods with my family, or indulging in being a homebody with a nerdy book or research paper on my porch.
Hi! I’m Sophia Zaia:
I’m an associate consultant at PowerLabs, where we support organizations in their work with volunteers and teams.
I got my organizing start as a student in the fossil fuel divestment movement. In my first year of organizing, I helped organize a thirty-day sit-in in my school’s administration building, and right before graduation I organized a hunger strike of students and professors.
Since then, I’ve supported campaigns from the inside and out, leveraging the youth vote in support of Kendra Brooks’ and Nicolas O'Rourke's at-large city council races in Philadelphia, working as deputy field director on Jessica Cisneros’ 2022 campaign for Congress, and running a distributed voter contact program that made more than 6 million dials and sent more than 1 million postcards during the 2020 election cycle, including making the majority of calls for Jamaal Bowman's 2020 congressional campaign.
Prior to joining Randall, I worked for five years with the Sunrise Movement, doing local and distributed electoral organizing.
After nearly burning out from organizing altogether, I found answers to so many of the challenges I faced inside Nerdy Movement.
When I first learned about the knowledge, skills and wisdom included in Nerdy Movement, it felt like a decoder key that could support me to make sense of my experiences and see a path forward to more effective organizing. Having the opportunity to support others to have similar epiphanies and see the transformation in their work is so fun and fulfilling!
When I’m not working, I’m likely two-stepping at a honky tonk in my home city of Austin, Texas, salsa dancing, spending time in the sun with friends/family, or bird watching … while continuing to feel most lit up while organizing.

This module is your introduction to the leading theory of motivation—self-determination theory, and sets the stage for the practical application methods in the following weeks.
Why start with theory? Theory provides a basis for understanding what we see and predicting outcomes. With theory on your side you can make informed decisions, design experiments for your unique context, and improve results.
On the first weekly call, you’ll meet the other two or three people in your learning circle, discuss the science of motivation, and make a plan to support each other to reach your learning goals and get the most from the program.
“This lesson helped me to understand why people were ghosting us. Our organization feels like a leaky bucket, with people only staying involved for days or weeks. Now I recognize our attempts to motivate people are causing them to feel anxiety, tension, and guilt. I have a few ideas of what to change and am excited to learn more.”

You'll learn why you might not want to screen people out based on their commitment to an issue, and what to do instead.
You'll also discover why people who are affected by an issue often seem not to care about it and what you can do to make it more likely they get involved.
Finally, you'll learn why it's essential to acknowledge members' anxieties and fears without diminishing them. And you’ll get a simple script that validates their feelings and supports them to take action on the issues that matter to them, despite the potential risks.
On the weekly call, you’ll discuss the content from the week and observe a coaching demonstration to prepare for week three.
“I didn't believe the anti-abortion movement research at first. It goes against everything I thought I knew about why people get involved. After some reflection and a conversation with one of our member leaders, I realized that the same thing happens in our organization, but we never recognized it. I'm feeling inspired to make changes and have some ideas of what to do from the Cosecha example.”

Coaching is one of our best (and unrecognized) methods to increase members’ leadership capacity. It increases their skills and ability to make the right choice in uncertain situations. Coaching also increases members’ commitment and persistence in the face of setbacks.
You'll learn a simple coaching framework and practice it with your learning circle this week.

You'll also learn the five characteristics of a role that can be changed to increase the motivation, satisfaction, and performance of a volunteer.
During the weekly group call, you’ll practice redesigning a role with your learning circle.

Creating a great team doesn't have to be left to chance.
In week five, you’ll learn an evidence-based framework for designing high-performing teams and practical methods to launch and support teams.
On the weekly call, you’ll evaluate a team you care about and get ideas from your peers on how to improve the team.
“Aaargh, I wish I knew about this framework before. I really resonate with the research that the source of conflict in teams is because of a bad team design. There is so much conflict within our volunteer and staff teams and it has only gotten worse during the pandemic. This framework gives me hope that we can stop putting on bandaids of conflict resolution and solve the root problems.”

There is no perfect plan in complex, uncertain and dynamic environments. The actions of our opponents, allies and others can impact the consequences of our actions in surprising and unpredictable ways. That’s why it is essential for organizations to have systems and practices to learn and adapt to changing contexts.
This week, you'll discover the three building blocks of a learning organization by using a diagnostic tool to examine a team or organization. This week also includes a deep dive into one component: psychological safety.
Amy Edmondson, the primary researcher and proponent of the concept, describes psychological safety as the "taken-for-granted beliefs about how others will respond when one puts oneself on the line, such as by asking a question, seeking feedback, reporting a mistake, or proposing a new idea. Teams with high psychological safety are likelier to learn, adapt, and achieve remarkable outcomes, especially in complex, uncertain, and interdependent environments."
On the weekly call, you’ll share an organizing challenge and get ideas on how to approach it from your peers.
“We used the psychological safety script and other tools from the study group to launch a new project building neighborhood teams. The project was a huge success, partially because the organizers were able to talk openly about how we were doing and what we could do better. We’re now using the psychological safety assessment to coach the team leaders to improve their leadership skills. I’m excited to see what they’ll accomplish using this new approach.”

Reading research and combing case studies is a favorite pastime of ours. It doesn’t mean it has to be yours.
Here’s what you DO need to be successful in Nerdy Movement:
An insatiable love of learning and a willingness to show up.
If we say “nerd” and your brain lights up in recognition…then you’re our people.
We’ll be honest: There’s training that’s much more straightforward than this–do this; don’t do that. That kind of blueprint/formulaic training can be valuable for brand new organizers.
Nerdy Movement, however, is for experienced organizers who want to get a fresh take on motivation + organizing, practice new skills, and build stronger and more effective member teams.
Within the program, you’ll look at the research with a critical eye, discover specific practices to try, and learn why they work so you can adapt them or create entirely new methods appropriate for your context.
Nerdy Movement requires a good deal of both curiosity and effort in our six weeks together–much more than attending that two-day, lecture-based training–but four years and nine cohorts of proven results say trusting the process is well worth it.
A readiness to buck the status quo and create organizations that make real change.

I'm currently in my first full-time paid organizer position and am growing our volunteer orientation/welcome call program during a big movement moment. The curriculum pulls together research from a range of disciplines. You will be reading, watching, and listening to the works of Edward Deci, Amy Edmondson, Richard Hackman, Hahrie Han, Ziad Munson, Richard Ryan, Ruth Wageman, and several others.
The overarching theory—self-determination theory—is developed by a global community of researchers and practitioners examining participants in diverse locations, including Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Uganda, Peru, and Russia. The research in weeks two and four primarily looks at people and organizations in the US. The research covered in weeks one, three, five, and six was conducted with participants and organizations from around the world.

Most of the examples in the study group are from US-based organizations and a wide range of organizing traditions. There are also examples from the anti-abortion movement and corporations.
Previous participants from around the world have found that they can apply the lessons taught in Nerdy Movement to their context because the group focuses on the theory and principles of human behavior, not just methods. The Nerdy Movement study group is entirely online. You can access the course content anywhere you have a computer or smartphone and internet access. The content is on a website and available via an iPhone or Android app. The community video calls are on Zoom, and the community forum is housed in a Slack workspace.

The content comes in both written + video-based formats. The course videos have closed captions available.

To help people with their real challenges, the conversations on the calls are kept off the record, therefore there are no recordings of the weekly calls. Please do your best to attend each call so you don't detract from your own learning experience or that of the people in your learning circle.

Yes, it is. Nerdy Movement is a significant and challenging commitment. It’s four to five hours of work each week, for six weeks.
The program uses a flipped classroom format. This means you’ll build your knowledge through two to three hours of weekly readings and videos on the course platform, with optional and supplementary audio, written, and video content if you want to go deeper in a specific area. That content is not repeated on the weekly calls. You’ll build your skills in a breakout room on the calls.
It would be misleading to say the study group is easy. It’s not.

We limit registrations from a single organization to four people per cohort to create more opportunities for cross-organization, cross-issue learning and relationship building.
A heads up: We don’t offer group discounts for the simple reason that we don’t want anyone being signed up against their will. They have to want to learn, participate, and do the work in order for this to…work.
