After the police murdered Philando Castile and Alton Sterling in July 2016, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) used two cycles of escalation and absorption to catalyze high risk and high disruption actions in dozens of cities and brought 10,000 people into offline relationships with the organization.
