Discover how to improve the well-being and performance of members and volunteers through the science of motivation

There are two secrets behind campaigns that build, wield, and win power in uncertain, complex, and dynamic environments:

Empirical analyses and history both show that there is no direct connection between scale and power.

Instead of focusing on scale, successful organizations prioritize building their capacity to learn, adapt and innovate.

Building strategic capacity creates the conditions for scale (if it makes sense to do so).

But if you start with scale as the goal, it's unlikely that you'll build the strategic capacity needed to win.

More people + more activity does not necessarily equal more power.

Organizers can create the conditions for the high-quality motivation of members, volunteers and activists leading to greater well-being and improved performance… and creating a virtuous cycle of ever-increasing capacity and commitment.

What truly matters isn't whether someone is motivated a little or a lot, but the quality of that motivation.

At PowerLabs, we’ve helped organizers across the globe transform how they work… and win. Through a mix of education and examples in this 60-minute exclusive call, we’ll:

✔️ Define and dive into self-determination theory, the science of motivation, performance and well-being

✔️ Discover how to create the conditions for volunteers to do their best work

✔️ Introduce the universal psychological needs and how they impact the well being of your members and volunteers

✔️ Share + discuss examples of how organizers are creating the conditions for high quality motivation…and winning

You can deliberately design an organizing program that leads to a virtuous cycle of deeper commitment, improved performance, and greater well-being within your movement and organization.

This call will plant the seeds for how. 🌱

Who’s presenting, anyway?

Hi, I’m Randall Smith: I’m a director at PowerLabs, where I help organizations design and run high-participation, people-powered campaigns.

I got my start as an activist when I joined a walkout to protest the first Gulf War in middle school. Later, I interned with a youth organization doing the spade work that contributed to a high profile and inspiring fight, and my future in organizing was sealed.

Since then, I’ve helped dozens of organizations apply insights from the science of motivation to their work, and they have used those insights to:

  • Introduce and popularize the Green New Deal and pass historic climate legislation,

  • Win state-level legislation and ballot measure campaigns,

  • Grow from 50 volunteers to 150 chapters in 18 months, and

  • Create 500 teams building the organization in their community.

I’ve been privileged to work with incredible organizations, from Courage California, Forward Together, Free Press, IfNotNow, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, Movimiento Cosecha, Missouri Organizing and Voter Engagement Collaborative, Showing Up for Racial Justice, Sunrise Movement, and United for Respect.

But my favorite thing is to introduce new organizations to this work through calls like this, as well as Nerdy Movement, where organizers show up in community to reimagine how they partner with their members to thrive as they pursue a collective purpose.

I hope you’ll join us.
